Op Mahra
The follwing signal from the British Ambassdor in Muscat, Sir Donald Hawley, the reply from Sir Alec Douglas-Home have an usual tone. It does appear that the ambassador had an excellent appreciation of the Mahra. The book by J.S. Alfree "Hawks of the Hadramout " and the account of the Eastern Aden Protectorate in the book " Without Glory in Arabia" by Hinchcliffe, Ducker and Holt give life to the phrase "like trying to herd cats". It is no wonder that Sir Donald Hawley was reserved. Nick Downie, did of course, venture 80 miles over the border with a lorry load of gelignite and destroyed a Yemeni fort.
